BANGALORE: The 46th edition of the Bengaluru Ganesh Utsava (BGU), organized by Sri Vidyarana Yuvaka Sangha (SVYS) started on Wednesday evening at the APS College Grounds in Basavangudi Bangalore. A major cultural event for the city, this year the inauguration honors will be done by Religious leader Sri Ravi Sankar.
In the past, BGU has had performances by eminent musicians and singers such as M S Subbulakshmi, Balamurali Krishna, KJ Yesudas, SP Balasubrahmanyam, Usha Uthup, P Unnikrishnan, Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan, Gantasal, PB Sreenivas, Mandolin U Srinivas, Sivamani, Shankar Mahadevan and Daler Mehndi. The event has been drawing huge crowds – SVYS claims around 200,000 people attend its cultural festival every year over the twelve days that it has held.
The event has many endorsements from the performers – “It’s a great honor and privilege to perform at the Bengaluru Ganesh Utsava, the same platform where several great maestros from the yesteryears performed,” says Shankar Mahadevan of the Breathless album fame.
“I first came here when I was 17 and since then I have been a part of the Utsava every year. At the Bengaluru Ganesh Utsava I find the audience possessing unbelievable amounts of energy,” says ace drummer Sivamani.
The 46th BGU has performances on the Classical santoor santoor by Pandit Shivkumar Sharma and Rahul Sharma; Navarasa and dual violin recital by Ganesh, Kumaresh & Group; Fusion music by Bifocal Brothers; Hindi pop music by Hariharan and group; classical music by C Vijayalakshmi G Rao on the veena and C Karthik G Rao on the keyboard, Sri Sundharnath on the sitar and Sri Vignesh Sharma on the tabla; Hindustani classical music by Jayatheertha Mahundi and Krishnendra Wadekar ; a fusion concert by Sivamani and Mandolin U Rajesh & Group; Kannada film music by Rajesh Krishnan, Shamita Malnad and Drums Deva ; classical vocal by Balamurali Krishna and Group among other cultural programs.
