MUMBAI: Back to back music is the trend followed by most music channels today but still there are music lovers who believe that the role of VJ (Video Jockey) in such shows is pivotal. VJ Nikhil Chinapa strongly believes that music lovers want to know the trivia of the track and a VJ who keeps on jabbering constantly.
Speaking to Radioandmusic.com, Chinapa highlights the aspects that he misses in today’s music channels. “Earlier, there was a VJ who talked about the music and various other aspects of the song which is missing in the music channels today. I used to enjoy listening to VJ Danny McGill and Sophiya Haque. They talked about the music and the unknown trivia and I found it interesting. Many people think playing back to back music is the way to go. I believe if you interested in music then you need to understand more about it. I feel bit disconnected with the new trend. There are lot people who say VJ jabbers. But I miss the trivia and that jabber which adds to the charm that is lost today.”
Highlighting the positive trend he said, “The music is becoming more democratic. Now, you are able to access all time of music through peer group and social network, one channel cannot promote their view.”

Speaking about the role of MTV, Chinapa said, “MTV is an entertainment channel that caters to the youth. We today have stories beyond reality shows and have shows that are music-based like Coke studio and Sound tripping. Now, there are shows that build stories around music. It is very important to youth.”
Chinapa has hosted almost every show MTV channel has aired. He hosted MTV’s longest running show MTV Select to being the host of Splitsvilla.
He further added, “Music is still there but the way music is accessed is changed. We are getting music from other sources like peer group and social networking sites. The younger generation is changing today. So the role of breaking music by MTV has been taken over by your friend circle and the entire pattern of consumption of music by younger generation has lead to the change in channels.”
This co-founder of Sunburn has also recently launched his debut compilation called Defected in the House India 2013. The album showcases his love for house music in all its forms. “We are in phase when dance music is evolving and growth in this genre is fantastic. Through this album, I have tried to create a doorway for people to try and discover music that exists beyond the usual music,” Chinapa concludes.
