MUMBAI: India’s first music expo, Baajaa Gaajaa, is back with a more diverse schedule this year. Not just Hindustani, but Carnatic and Folk music will also be the mainstay of Baajaa Gaajaa 2010
Started in 2009 with a vision to represent India’s diverse music by Underscore Records, an independent label founded by Shubha Mudgal and husband Aneesh Pradhan, Baajaa Gaajaa 2010 will be hosted at Pune’s Ishanya Mall starting from 5 – 7 February 2010. The event will be inaugrated by Santoor meastro Pt. Shivkumar Sharma
A platform for everything indie, this music expo provides ample oppurtunities for independent musicians, music labels and instrument makers to interact and network besides discussing some key issues pertaining to the indie industry. Going by the way the festival was executed last year, this year too music enthusiasts can expect some unique offerings at the expo
Baajaa Gaajaa will be having two open stages for musicians and approximately 50 performances are lined up to perform over the three days. For music lovers who like to explore new sounds, this music expo will be a treat. From Gujrati folk music, to something as unique as Rashtriya Sahiri and Bhedik Sahiri is part of the schedule, besides the obvious inclusion of fusion and rock bands.

Interestingly, this is not limited to just Indian performers. “Non-Indian musicians who are helping spread Indian music in the west will also be performing at the expo,” Mudgal told Radioandmusic.com. Among those participating would be, Australian sarod player and author of ‘Inventing the Sarod’ Adrian McNeil who would be speaking on ‘Music Education’ at one of the seminars. Besides, Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma’s disciple Takahiro (Japan), and Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia’s disciple Hiro (Japan) would also be performing at the venue.
As far as pro performances go, Baajaa Gaajaa has gone a notch higher and is not limiting itself just to performances. Serious listeners would like to watch stalwarts like Rashid Khan (Hindustani Music) and T M Krishna (Carnatic Music) performing together – albeit with a twist. “It will not be a jugalbandi, but an interesting performance where the duo will be performing and highlighting common grounds between Hindustani and Carnatic music,” Mudgal said. Popular live acts Indian Ocean and Motherjane are also slated to perform at the expo. An added feature – those attending the expo will get a limited edition compilation CD of indie artistes exclusively produced by one of India’s pioneering indie label Earth Sync.
