MUMBAI: ‘Raunaq’, the album composed by the Mozart of Madras, AR Rahman, comprises seven songs revealed the maestro himself, who was present at Blue Frog, Mumbai to launch the song ‘Ladli’. The lyrics of the song have been penned by Kapil Sibal, and the vocals rendered by Lata Mangeshkar and Rahman.
The track ‘Ladli’ has been dedicated to women empowerment. When asked how Rahman convinced Lata Mangeshkar to croon the number the Oscar winning composer said, “Initially she refused to sing the song and then I did not try to convince her too much, as I was already working on a Hollywood movie. But when I came back, I told her that if she does not sing, I would not launch the album. I waited for three months.”
In a one on one conversation with Radioandmusic.com’s Dhairya Ingle, former Union minister and lyricist of the track Sibal said, “This song ‘Ladli’ is for all the women in the world who spread cheer among the people around. For me a woman is someone who stands tall despite difficult situations. She is a creator, nurturer, which is why we thought we would pay respects to a woman.”

Talking about his process of writing lyrics, he said, “It just comes naturally. I really do not decide that I wish to write a song or a poem. Out of the 25-30 poems I have written, Rahman handpicked seven songs. I did not interfere in the selection process,” he concluded.
‘Ladli’ starts with a girl running with a paper airplane. It proceeds with the phases of her life and the kind of laughter she brings among her friends and family. She fights for another girl who is molested by a group of men on the street and rescues her, whilst on-lookers do nothing about it. The song finishes with her fulfilling her ambition of becoming an air force pilot.
