MUMBAI: Viva girl Anushka Manchanda has given her voice for yet another spunky track ‘Kaboom’, which is one of the songs from the film ‘One by Two’, whose music is currently suffering a promotional crisis. Turning to YouTube for some relief, the soundtrack has been released on the video sharing site, in the hope that this move will help in some small way, to promote the film.
Anushka Manchanda, currently taking it easy in Goa, said, “The song is pretty cool, even the message. My general attitude in life is a bit like that.” When asked about the experience working with Shankar Ehsaan Loy, she answered, “To be very honest, my experience working with them is always the same. It is great to work with people who know exactly what they want; they know my voice very well. One of my first songs was with Shankar for Viva. They have seen me grow. When they call me, they are very specific. They call me if they know I can do the song and they give me full freedom to go for it. At the same time, they know what they want. It is really fun because you are being directed well but at the same time, you are free to give your inputs and try different things. I think this is the ideal situation for me.”
Her spunky voice and her ability to throw in some saucy attitude, makes her the go to singer for high energy tracks. But does she wish she was doing something different? “I do a lot of ad jingles where I do the kind of vocals that I would never do for film song; soft and melodious, completely other end of the spectrum. Like the Vodafone ‘Little things you do’ ad, or the Titan Raga Pottery TVC that has Katrina Kaif, these are the kind of recordings I am called for,” she replied, adding, “The only time I did a song like that in Bollywood was for Vishal-Shekhar for ‘Honi lagi’ from the film De Taali, and although it was a beautiful song, the film did not really pick up.”
Biker girl Anushka is presently representing India Bike Week in Goa. “When I came to Bombay, I got my bike. Initially it was so convenient since I could weave my way through traffic, no matter how jammed the roads. But with the pollution in Mumbai, there is so much of dust and it is so dirty and grimy. So I stopped riding there. But Goa is such a lovely place to ride,” said the proud owner of an Enfield Bullet 350. “I am more of a cruiser, so no need for higher horsepower. When I ride, I do 40 or 60 kmph. I have a small Yamaha RX 100 as well. It is like a toy bike compared to my Enfield, which is a very heavy bike!” she laughs.
The Golmaal singer spoke about a new phase and the kind of music she is not listening to. “I have been through different phases with music. Over the last six months, I have been listening to a lot of music that my younger brother listens to. He is a guitarist with the metal band Reverse Polarity, and he suggested some songs and artistes to me, which I really liked. It is not exactly metal, very alternate really, and it is the only music I listen to when I am home. In between I was really enjoying psychedelic music. I like music that gives my mind something to do,” she laughs.
When asked how Goa was treating her, she said, “I am taking it easy for a while now. I have been working consistently and I really thought Goa would be the go to destination. But my friend just acquired and renovated a hotel in Anjuna and we were doing a lot of activities there. After New Year’s, around 4 January, I actually started relaxing. I put a hammock outside my house and I decided to do nothing.”
Looks like Manchanda’s creative juices are flowing, but she is in no rush. “I will keep getting shows and songs. For me, personally, I am still trying to figure out what kind of music I want to make. My brother is so supportive, he just decided for me that I should not make a play, instead, take it easy, listen to music and just write what music comes to me without thinking too much. He also suggested that I step back from time to time and review what I have written,” she signed off.
