MUMBAI: After hosting shows like ‘Suhana Safar’ on Big FM, ‘Golden Era With Annu Kapoor’ on Masti and ‘Kuch Baatien Kuch Yaadein ‘ on Sony Mix, Annu Kapoor has analysed various eras of the music industry. According to him, the current generation of music composers does not consist of many composers, but rather has music arrangers, who with the help of technology can create music.
“The previous generation had greats like Naushad, Salil Chowdhury, Shankar Jaikishan and many more. But today we have a lot of programmers who make songs. Barring one or two artistes, no one is a real composer. Most of them in the current generation take the help of technology to make tunes,” said Kapoor. He also added that most of the songs today lack recall value.
He believes that today, in order to become a singer; one does not really require training. “Today, technology can make you sound so good, that anyone can become a singer, which is why half of the actors become singers. If you ask them to sing even a single line with live musicians, you will know how good or bad their singing skills are. They are not singers, but machines make them singers. The race is only and only about how fast you copy Hollywood,” he explained.

Kapoor is of the opinion that in order to become a good lyricist, a person should have good knowledge of language. Only then songs can express emotions clearly. Citing an example of Majrooh Sultanpuri, he elucidated, “Lyricists experimented a lot with words, but they did not kill the language. They knew how to place a word correctly. We cannot compare the era then and now, only because we cannot compare the best and mediocre.”
Apart from hosting shows on television and radio, Kapoor has also tried his hands at singing. He recently crooned a number ‘Committee’ for the film ‘Jai Ho Democracy’, which was released on 24th April, 2015.
