MUMBAI: Ambika Soni, Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting, inaugurated â€?Jyotirgamaya’, the Panjab University Community Radio Station (CRS) and Educational Multimedia Research Centre (EMMRC) in the School of Communication Studies (SCS) in Panjab University. Dr. R.C. Sobti, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University; Dr. Archna Singh, Chairperson, faculty and students of SCS and other senior faculty members of the Panjab University were present.
The Minister said it was the endeavour of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting to promote Community Radio Stations as these were the best bonding agents and involved the local population while giving local news. These stations would also provide new avenues of profession for youngsters who could even form groups to set up their own CRS. Radio, she said, was a medium which made us reach the farthest corners of the country and also made us celebrate our diversity and cultural variance….
On learning that the University CRS had a range of only six kilometers, the Minister assured that on her return to Delhi she would send a team to look into the matter and see why the range could not be enhanced.
The Minister told media persons that there was need for self-regulation on general entertainment channels, and the government was already close to formulating a framework under which this could be made possible. She pointed out, however, that this framework would be self regulatory and independent. Referring to the monopolization of cable network system in some states, including Punjab, the Minister said this was not acceptable and soon the government will bring about some way of tackling this issue.
