Akriti Kakar: “Indi-pop has merged with Bollywood music”

MUMBAI: After her Australia tour, talented singer Akriti Kakar is back in the city working on her new album. Though the singer did not reveal the name of the album, she says that fans can expect an ‘out of the box’ work that will show her in a new light.

“My next album is going to be a blend of electronic and crazy use of live instruments. I plan to give listeners unplugged straight from the heart versions of few songs from the previous album and this one too along with the new songs in the same album. So it will be a mix of various genres all woven together. I’m looking at some interesting musical collaborations too,” Kakar says.

Though well aware of the unfriendly landscape of today’s album music market with piracy and illegal downloads, Kakar will go ahead with a physical album.

“I will release my album physically for the old school charm of seeing it on the stands. Yes, there will be one video to begin with and may be more depending on the response we generate. I feel good music paves its way through. My first original album too made its way through GIMA (Global Indian Music Awards) 2011 bagging the best non film album award. These little things and good encouraging words from the fraternity make a world of difference and become the backbone to our future endeavours,” she states.

Kakar, like most singers of her generation has learnt to balance between her pop world and Bollywood assignments. She has released four albums and has sung for a number of films with top music directors like Shankar Ehsaan Loy (SEL), Himesh Reshammiya, Pritam and Aadesh Srivastava.

She also recently held a well received concert in Sydney. ” It was my first time in Australia by myself and was a very heartwarming experience. Indian music gets everyone grooving and enjoying. I have seen everyone from Japanese to Africans, Russians to Turks enjoy and dance on Indian beats n tunes. I feel proud to be able to represent and perform genres ranging from non film music to fusion to folk and commercial Bollywood music to entertain the audiences,” she says.

Sharing her views on the music industry, of which she is a part of since winning the TVS Sa Re Ga Ma National Talent Hunt in 1998 (Junior / Children’s Special) on Zee TV, Kakkar says things have changed since her childhood days when pop and Bollywood were distinct categories with their own sound.

“In my school days there used to be a distinct sound of typical Bollywood film music involving particular film legendary voices, whereas pop music had a sound and vibe of its own which was essentially pop. Singers like Alisha Chinai, Falguni Pathak, Sunita Rao, Colonial Cousins, Shaan, Lucky Ali defined the pop music scene for us. Lataji, Ashaji, Kavita Krishnamurty, Alka ji, defined the sound of bollywood music with dholaks, tablas and violin ensembles creating that big grand bollywood sound.”

With the passing of the years, pop (has) kept declining and newer sounds of Bollywood started to develop. “In the current times, the Bollywood we hear is a merger of pop music and Bollywood’s own proud typical sound. And I am most certainly proud to be a part of this generation of music. There are a few (Bollywood projects) gorgeous songs coming up,” she adds.
