Afghanistan opens up to young music

MUMBAI: After witnessing many restrictions under the Taliban rule which also banned music amongst others, Afghanistan is now finally opening up to music with a host of young rappers developing the music scene in the country.

Young DJs and singers recently took part in a music festival in Kabul, but as per reports, many Afghans fear that the withdrawing of international troops could risk the cultural revival, if it opens way to the return of Taliban’s influence.

Earlier, due to the influence of Taliban, no form of music was present in any way including concerts, TV and radio amongst others. All forms of music except religious chanting was banned under the Sharia law enforced by the Taliban during their rule from 1996 to 2001.

But situations are changing now and Kabul is finally witnessing rock concerts being held there, with many also being female rappers in the scene. Every year, rappers and DJs from the country come together for an annual music festival titled ‘Sound Central’ organized by the French Cultural Centre.

With more concerts being hosted on pop and rock music, art in the form of poetry and music is receiving a tremendous boost in the once forlorn area of Afghanistan.
