MUMBAI: For the first time, Marathi music composer Aditya Bedekar takes on the responsibility of not only composing the songs, but also the background score for the upcoming romantic comedy ‘Coffee Ani Barach Kahi’.
Radioandmusic.com spoke to Bedekar about his progression from composing the score to composing the tracks for the film. “Prakash Kunte (the director) and I have been friends for about eight years. I met him when the two of us were the assistant directors of ‘Satrangi Re’. Since then, we remained friends. ‘Satrangi Re’ was in fact, the first film for which I composed the background score,” said Bedekar.
There are two songs featured in the film, and a third composed only for promotional purposes. Bedekar further stated that the music of the film was developed simultaneously with the writing phase. “The song ‘Rang He Nave Nave’ was composed when Prakash told me his idea for the film – about a guy waiting for a girl on a bridge in Pune. The second song ‘Tu Astis Tar’ was composed soon after Prakash was ready with the first draft of the film. The third song which is the title track was composed very recently, and it is not featured in the film, it was composed to be used only for promotional purposes for the film,” added Bedekar.

“The sound of the film is very minimalistic and easy listening,” he explained. He further said, “I am a huge fan of filmmaker Vishal Bharadwaj’s compositions and have incorporated some of those atmospheric, moody influences in the movie. There is orchestration with world music, along with a nice fusion of Indian flute and saxophones in the main coffee shop scene in the film.”
Bedekar moved to Mumbai in 2005 and finished a course in music direction conducted by the late Anil Mohile from University of Mumbai. There he learnt music composition, especially, instrumentation arrangement for film music. Bedekar then went on to compose many polyphonic ringtones. He first gained mainstream recognition in the film industry when he gave the background score for the hit 2011 film ‘Singham’, whose songs were composed by well known Marathi music composer duo Ajay-Atul.
Bedekar cites French electronic acts Télépopmusik and Deep Forest as his favourites. ‘Rang He Nave Nave’ features vocals by Sasha Tirupati and lyrics by Yogesh Damle. Damle also wrote the title track which is sung by the entire cast. The track ‘Tu Astis Tar’ features vocals by Pandit Sanjeev Abhyankar and is written by Mangesh Padgaonkar.
‘Coffee Ani Barach Kahi’ will hit theatres Friday, 3 April.
