MUMBAI: Abhanga Repost, the Mumbai based band that is entering the independent music scene in Mumbai by recomposing the traditional abhangas (folk music set to a spiritual theme), is all set to launch its debut single. The band fuses contemporary elements with traditional abhangas to spread the wisdom in it.
Their first single music video ‘Deh Devache Mandir’ is penned by the poet saint from Maharashtra, ‘Tukaram,’ and the music video will be launched on 25 December 2016, at Sahitya Sangha Mandir, Girgaon, Mumbai.
The centuries old traditions of ‘abhangas’ are verses composed by saints in Maharashtra and set to devotional tunes.

The band Abhanga Repost comprises Suyog Gosavi on vocals, Ajay Vavhal on lead guitar, Swapnil Tarphe on bass guitar, Viraj Acharya on tabla/ percussion, Piyush Acharya on harmonium who is also a new member of the band and Dush Dev drums.
The band spokesperson Swapnil Tarphe who is also the bass guitarist of the band shared with Radioandmusic.com that the video launch will be incorporated with the band performing a set of Abhangas.
“We shot the video in October at a village named ‘Otav’ near Kankavli, Maharashtra and it was a five-day shoot. We invested some amount and firstly we did the audio production, but then we decided to do it on a bigger scale. Thankfully, we met this Mumbai-based producer Raju Kamlakar Kale who had faith in us and invested some money,” said Swapnil when we asked him about the video and production.
The abhanga ‘Deh Devache Mandir’, which they will perform, portrays that your body is your temple and your soul is God. Then why waste your time searching for ‘Him’ in the temples?
Swapnil added that they have performed this particular ‘abhanga’ many times; but ‘the composition for a video is very different than it is for a live performance’, added he.
When radioandmusic.com asked why they chose this particular composition, Swapnil said this abhanga has profound meaning and it is one of the band’s favourite abhangas.
“This music video launch is going to be followed by a life performance by us. We have not thought of selling it or anything hence it is a single video, and soon the video will be available online,” added Swapnil.
