A ‘swift’ reply to Kanye, a tribute to Bowie and a shout out to Lamar: 58th Grammys had it all
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

MUMBAI: The 58th Grammy Awards had its moments- some more glorious than others- although once again the never-ending battle of egos between Taylor Swift and Kanye West grabbed the attention. Swift accepted her award for the ‘Best Album Of The Year’ for the second time in a row. “I want to say to all the young women out there—there are going to be people along the way who will to try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame,” said Swift after accepting her 10th Grammy award. Swift becomes the first woman to win ‘Best Album’ twice and used the example to hit out at West for his notorious comment on ‘Shake It Off’ singer – “I made that bitch famous”

Swift won ‘Best Pop Vocal Album’ for ‘1989’, as well as Best Music Video for ‘Bad Blood,’ her collaboration with Kendrick Lamar.

..AND THE AWARD GOES TO

Taylor Swift’s second Grammy award for Best Album is indeed the talk of the hour. However, there were few surprises and some obvious winners.
‘Uptown Funk’ the hit single from the collaboration of Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson won the ‘Best Record of the Year’.

Nominated seven times before, Sheeran missed out on ‘Album of the Year’ this year. However, Sheeran’s ‘Thinking Out Loud’ won the ‘Best Song Of The Year’. Sheeran also won ‘Best Pop Solo Performance’ for the track.

Kendrick Lamar won the ‘Best Rap Album’ for ‘To Kick A Butterfly’. The artist also received a shout-out from Adele after her performance- “I love you, Kendrick. You are amazing!” Lamar also won Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance, Best Rap/Sung Collaboration, and Best Music Video.

Meghan Trainor won the ‘Best New Artist’. The ‘All About Bass’ singer beats Courtney Barnett, James Bay, Tori Kelly, and Sam Hunt to acclaim the prize.

Having won the ‘Best Rock Performance’ for ‘Always Alright’ in 2014, the Alabama-based Alabama Shakes reclaimed the award for ‘Don’t Wanna Fight’ at the 58th Grammy awards.

The band also won the ‘Best Alternative Music Album’ for ‘Sound & Color’. British rock band Muse won their second ‘Best Rock Album’ at the Grammys. The 2015-release ‘Drones’ becomes the band’s second studio album to win the award, after the 2011-release ‘The Resistance’.

‘Born To Play Guitar’ becomes the sixth Grammy victory for Blues legend Buddy Guy. The 79-year-old veteran Blues musician last won the prestigious award for the category ‘Best Contemporary Blues Album’ in 2010 for ‘Living Proof’

The Lows

Eight-time Grammy winner Rihanna’s absence from the Grammy stage had the viewers and audience wonder about the rumours around her health. Rihanna soon tweeted confirming her absence. TMZ later reported the singer was advised not to perform by her doctor citing the fears of damaging her vocal chords. Rihanna was supposed to perform ‘Kiss It Better’ from ‘ANTI’.

The much-awaited Adele’s performance at the Grammy was marred due to poor technical arrangements related to the sound. Mid-way to her song ‘All I Ask’ from the latest album- ’25’- the piano mics fell on the piano, thus creating an unpleasant sound. Watch the performance here –

The tributes

Reports of Lady Gaga paying tribute to her icon David Bowie surfaced over a month ago, and Gaga upped the hype with a Bowie tattoo last week. The hype and the wait was justified with Gaga exhibiting one of the finest live performances on the Grammy stage. The singer covered some of the Bowie classics including ‘Space Oddity’, ‘Rebel Rebel’, ‘Fashion’, ‘Fame’ and ‘Heroes’. Known to be an eccentric dresser, Gaga wore Bowie’s iconic outfits and make-up. Nominated for two categories, American songwriter and producer Miguel performed an emotional cover of Michael Jackson’s ‘She’s Out Of My Life’ from the album ‘Off The Wall’. Miguel was accompanied by the original keyboardist of the composition, and archival footages of Michael Jackson played overhead.

The Performances

Justin Bieber, Skrillex, Diplo and Jack Ü performed for the first time at an event. The artists performed ‘Where Are U Now’ with instruments and string section. Bieber introduced the track with his original ‘Love Yourself’ on an acoustic arrangement.

Alabama Shakes won ‘Best Rock Song’ and ‘Best Rock Performance’ and the band’s performance at the Grammy had everyone at their feet. Shakes’ ‘Sound & Color’ was nominated for Best Album Of The Year.
