A lot of ‘Paisa’ and a bit of Swag: Vishal Dadlani croons for another Marathi flick

MUMBAI: Noted music composer and vocalist Vishal Dadlani can be heard singing the opening track for an upcoming Marathi movie ‘Paisa Paisa’, the music for which was released by Zee Music Marathi on 18 April 2016 on YouTube.

The credit for getting Dadlani to sing for a Marathi film should probably go to Soham Pathak, a 22 year old composer, who is also the lead vocalist for alternative Hindi rock band Sparsh and who has got a few more of the most influential voices from the Hindi and Marathi film industries to lend their voices for the three-track set-list.

Pathak told Radioandmusic.com that the experience and expertise Dadlani brought to the studio was pretty effective. “The composition was prepared, and Dadlani practically took 45 minutes to sing the song once he heard the track,” informed Pathak, also the lyricist for ‘Paisa Paisa’ compositions. “When the director approached me to discuss the nature of the soundtrack, he simply told me one thing – We need a lot of swag,” added Pathak, whose filmography so far includes ‘Babanchi Shala’, ‘Shyamche Vadil’ and ‘Bioscope’. The new-age musicians of the industry want to change how marathi music is perceived, and Pathak’s soundtrack only helps the cause.

The track titled ‘Hi Ratra Majhi Maitrini’, also the title track for the movie, talks about how the night acted as the friend of the protagonist. The genre of ‘rock music’ has been tried, tested and critically accepted in the Marathi industry, and Dadlani believes the regional industry has evolved exponentially in recent years. “If you just see the work done by Ajay-Atul for their latest projects, the maturity of music can be noticed. Shankar Mahadevan in ‘Katyar Kaljaat Ghusli’ was outstanding,” added Dadlani.

The movie has been produced by Dadlani’s make-up man and friend Shiv Vilas Chaurasiya under ‘The Nine Films’ banner. Dadlani had previously sung for Marathi flicks – ‘Balak Palak’ and ‘Timepass 2’. Neeti Mohan, Avadhoot Gupte and Aadarsh Shinde have provided vocals to the soundtrack of ‘Paisa Paisa’, along with Dadlani.

“The urban youth (or the metropolitan crowd) finds it cool to only listen to English or Hindi mainstream music, which is cool, but there’s an immense quality in the Marathi film industry that gets ignored,” informed Dadlani. Active on the alternative music front, the frontman of ‘Pentagram’ also noted the improved quality of Marathi entertainment also extends to movies and general entertainment. “When you compare some of the Marathi movies, they totally surpass the Hindi mainstream and other regional movies in terms of quality and the storyline,” said Dadlani. But Dadlani does not rely on the very fact to sign whatever projects put forth. “One of the music directors approached me for a Marathi film, and honestly, the storyline and the project sounded very promising, but it would be unfair for people like us (from Bollywood) to sing for regional movies (like Marathi).

There’s a lot of talent in Marathi industry, and they need to be discovered and encouraged,” replied Dadlani, on whether he would keep working more on Marathi productions.

The movie ‘Paisa Paisa’, directed by Joji Raechal Job, is scheduled to release in the first week of May.
