MUMBAI: The 85th Academy Awards have announced its nominations in all categories for the 2013 awards ceremony slated to be held on 24 February at Dolby Theatre, Hollywood.
Leading the nominees in music were popular films ‘Life of Pi’ and ‘Skyfall’ with four nods each. The films bagged nominations in categories like ‘Best Original Score’, ‘Best Sound Editing’, ‘Best Sound Mixing’ and ‘Best Original Song’ – ‘Pi’s Lullaby’ (Life of Pi) and ‘Skyfall’ (Skyfall) respectively.
Indian singer Bombay Jayashri won her first Academy Award nomination for writing the lyrics for the lilting ‘Pi’s Lullaby’ in Ang Lee’s ship-wreck story ‘Life of Pi’. Ramnath, a Carnatic singer is a well known name in Tamil cinema and has sung a number of songs with renowned composers like Ilaiyaraaja, AR Rahman and Yuvan Shankar Raja. The music of the song has been composed by Mychael Danna earning him the second Academy Award nomination.
They will be competing with British singer Adele’s nomination for her James Bond theme song as the ‘best original song’, which also marks the first award for the Bond franchise in more than 30 years. ‘Skyfall’ the 23rd James Bond film, scored five nominations, the best showing in the 50-year history of the 007 series. The last time a James Bond film was nominated for an Oscar was in 1982, for the film ‘For Your Eyes Only’.
Following up with three music nods was the film ‘Argo’ for ‘Best Original Score’, ‘Best Sound Editing’ and ‘Best Sound Mixing’. Other films nominated in the music categories are Anna Karenina, Lincoln, Les Miserables, Django Unchained, Chasing Ice, Ted and Zero Dark Thirty.
The nominations were announced by actress Emma Stone and Oscars show host Seth MacFarlane in Beverly Hills. The 85th Academy Awards will honour the James Bond franchise’s 50th anniversary at this year’s ceremony with a tribute broadcast. MacFarlane will also make history as the first host to announce the nominations as well as the awards.
