MUMBAI: Ik Onkaar states: There is only one God and Creator…. This is the first line of Guru Nanak’s Mul Mantra, and it is recited by millions around the world. Many consider it the Sikh creed as it communicates the Sikh belief in a single, universal god as opposed to the traditional Hindu concept of polytheism.
It is found in the Gurmukhi script and is consequently also prt of the Sikh morning prayer, Japji Sahib. It is a combitination of two characters: the numeral Ik (one) and the first letter of the word Onkaar (God) – which happens to be the first letter of the Gurmukhi script with a specially adapted vowel symbol, and is derived from Sanskrit.
Sikhism, the fifth-largest religion in the world, is a beautiful religion embodying peace, love, mutual respect, and rightful living. The Ik Onkaar mantra perfectly encompasses the core Sikh belief – Presence of one universal God.
The â€?Ik Onkaar’ hymn has special significance in the life of Bhupinder Singh. His father, Nathaa Singh, a music professor in Khalsa College, Amirtsar, would recite this mantra to him when he was a liitle child. The mantra had a profound impact on him and moved him immensely. At that time itself, Bhupinder Singh had resolved to put this Mantra to music, share it with everybody, and spread peace. Bhupinder Singh is proud to present this album that comes straight from his heart and is a culmination of his deep reverence towards his father.
