Tata Communications Employees to hold musical competition for underprivileged children

MUMBAI: Sur Jhankar is a musical contest for underprivileged children being conducted by the employees of Tata Communications for the last three years as a part of the employee voluntary programme.

The finals of Sur Jhankar 2010 will be held on June 5, 2010 where the top three performers will be selected by a panel comprising of eminent personalities from the media and entertainment industry.

The June 5 programme will mark the culmination of a five month process during which Tata Communications employees in their spare time moved around slums, shanties, orphanages and partnered with NGOs to identify budding musical talent and groom them to perform in front of a large audience. The final event slated for June 5 has been preceded by a multistage screening process during which employee volunteers in their spare time fanned out into slums, shanties, orphanages and co-coordinated with other NGOs.

Tata Communications employees believe that such opportunities not only build the confidence of the otherwise shy child participants but also contribute immensely in building up an Inclusive Society, as these children perform alongside the employees’ children.

The first TCL Sur Jhankar was held in June 2008 and since then it has been very popular with NGOs in Mumbai who have lent their wholehearted support to this initiative.
