MUMBAI: Radio One, 94.3 FM today concluded its Sony Ericcson Radio One College Championship 2008 with an event at Mumbai’s uber-hip dessert lounge, Hokey Pokey Ice Creams. Shriya Saran, who’s a youth icon, was the guest of honor at the event. This annual RJ hunt is conducted in colleges across metros in India, at the end of which, the winners, a team of two per city, are selected to join Radio One’s award winning programming team on air. This is also the largest event on radio for the college target audiences.
This immensely popular and much anticipated activity, received over 3000 registrations from colleges across the country. Auditions were held within each college, with participants competing in pairs. Contestants were tested on different aspects of being an RJ, through role plays. For instance they were asked to interview a difficult celebrity, or create a witty link for a segment. The panel looked at the contestant’s presence of mind, wit, his ability to deal with various studio and outdoor broadcasting situations, his knack of presenting current affairs in an engaging manner and so on. A team of two was selected per college, and these teams were then trained at the Radio One Studios by the station’s leading RJs. The next stage of the contest was an on-air competition, where each college team competed with the other and the winners from each city received an internship with Radio One
Shriya met with the semi-finalists and awarded the delighted winners a Sony Playstation. Semifinalists also received tubs of ice cream from Hokey Pokey. Shriya chatted with winners and took photos with each of them, and spoke about how it was great to be with a young vibrant group like this.
