Mumbai: 94.3 FM, Radio One, for the Fataafat Generation, today concluded the Radio One Literacy Drive, with an event at Campion School Mumbai. Through this initiative, the station organized a weeklong book drive that brought in over 3000 books which will be distributed to underprivileged children. The programme was run in association with Concern India Foundation and Crossword Bookstores.
Jugal Hansraj, writer and director of the much awaited animated film Roadside Romeo and alumni of Campion School was guest of honour at the event. Also joining him, to the immense delight of the school children, were the stars… Romeo and Laila. The Concern India and Campion kids all got individual and group pictures with the characters while Jugal shared his delight at both being a part of such a worthwhile initiative and being back at school again.
He said As a child I read voraciously, and I’m happy to be able to be a part of the Radio One Literacy Drive that is making an effort to share that benefit with others who may not otherwise have the opportunity. My reading has inspired characters in the film, and these have been floating around in my mind for years. So it’s excellent to be part of this effort.

With nearly 35% of the population still illiterate, Radio One’s Literacy Drive has a specific focus on Concern India’s adult and youth education efforts. With a firm belief that everyone, young and old deserves an education to meet the challenges of this century, the station hopes that people will receive and read stories from the books generated through the drive, which will inspire them towards literacy or further education.
The literacy drive was promoted on air, through ads in newspapers and the station’s website, as well as in Crossword Stores across the city. Listeners simply dropped books they wish to donate to any Crossword bookstore near them. The books were collected by the store and Radio One handed them to Concern India Foundation for use in their programmes.
