MUMBAI: Dive into the depths of rhythm. Discover the dynamics of laya. Experience the joy of singing, playing and dancing— together yet apart. Experiment with music, mind and movement. Join us for a one-day workshop on Pancha Jati with Pandit Chitresh Das, the renowned Kathak maestro, and innovator of Kathak Yoga. Das has performed internationally, including at the NCPA, to great acclaim.
Pancha Jati in Indian dance and music refers to five main categories of rhythm patterns-cycles of three, four, five, seven and nine beats. There is a fascinating system of rhythm that arises when mathematics and aesthetics combine to form complex tala patterns. Find out how you can overlay seven steps over eight beats, or Pancha Jati on 16 beats, and see the magic such permutations can produce. This workshop is targeted at musicians, dancers and all those who want to develop a deeper appreciation for rhythms in dance and music. Come, challenge your mind, push your body, and sweat it out!
Registration: Open to all above 14 years (mainly for adults), for dancers/musicians and those who want to deepen their understanding of rhythm. Musicians to get their instruments. Please come dressed in comfortable clothing to be able to dance if required.
