MUMBAI: 92.7 BIG FM, Chennai’s No.1 Melody station, honoured Chennai’s unsung heroes at the BIG Chennaiite Awards 2011… in recognition of their significant contributions to society in a glittering ceremony at Hotel Benzz Park at the weekend.
The leading radio station instituted the BIG Chennaiite Awards 2011… in August on the occasion of the 372nd birthday of Chennai, with the objective of celebrating the silent efforts of the common man to social causes and involving the local populace in acknowledging their work.
Ms Vijayakumari won the BIG Contribution to the Welfare of Mentally Challenged for her yeoman service in the southern metropolis.

The robust voting mechanism calling for Chennaiites to nominate anyone who they believed qualified to be titled BIG Chennaite was done over a four-month intensive campaign and included voting happening both on-air (radio listeners) as well as taken on ground across high footfall areas in the city where people physically casted their votes.
The eminent jury comprises ace film critic & journalist Mr. Madhan, noted TV & Media personality Mr. Ramesh Prabha, Chief reporter of The New Indian Express Mr. SaptarishiBhattacharya and internationally-known violinist Dr. M. Lalitha.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Kiran Thangarajan, Station Head, 92.7 BIG FM, Chennai said: BIG Chennaite Awards… is yet another landmark initiative by 92.7 BIG FM in our endeavor to give the local populace an opportunity to voice their opinion and acknowledge the contributions of the city’s public to our society.
