MUMBAI: Sonu Nigam doesn’t need any introduction. The National Award winner, who has been enthralling fans with his soulful voice for over 25 years, completes his 43 today.
He can sing, mimic, even act. But there are many unusual facets to this man as well. On his birthday, Radioandmusic.com takes a look at what the maverick Sonu is capable of.
Being the Roadside Ustaad

Lately, Sonu has been experimenting with his talent. Some time ago, he masked himself as a roadside artiste for Culture Machine’s digital channel Being Indian’s video ‘The Roadside Ustaad’. It was an experiment done on the busy streets of Juhu, Mumbai to see how the pedestrians react to the singing of an old man.

Being Equal
The versatile singer, Sonu collaborated with India’s first transgender band 6-Pack Band for their third single. The 6-Pack Band comprises six transgender singers hailing from India’s Hijra community and curated by composer Shameer Tandon.

Being Global
In 2011 Nigam collaborated with Britney Spears on a remix of her ‘I Wanna Go’ and with DJ Avicii on his song ‘Indian Levels’ produced by Avicii in 2012. This is the first ever international collaboration between singing sensation Sonu Nigam and world-renowned DJ, Avicii. Super cool, isn’t it?

Being ‘Crazy Dil’
Sonu’s last music video ‘Crazy Dil’ is definitely one of his comical musical experiments.
Dabbling in multiple themes, the star-studded music video comprises surprise performances from Farah Khan, Rajkumar Hirani, Kailash Kher, Sunil Grover, Natalie Di Luccio and the cutest appearance by his son Nevaan Nigam. You’ll see them sing, dance, go crazy on the beats and much more.

Being an RJ
In 2006 Sonu added another feather to his hat, while he became a Star Radio Jockey for Radio City. He had over 5 million listeners glued to their radios for one hour every week on his show ‘Life Ki Dhun with Sonu Niigaam’. The show became a platform for him to share his thoughts, interact with his fans and interview colleagues from the music industry. He even convinced Lata Mangeshkar for a three and a half hour long live interview which by itself was an event in the history of the Indian music industry.
Being Filmi
Nigam’s acting career started as a child in films including ‘Betaab’ (1983). As an adult, he acted in films such as Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani, Kash Aap Hamare Hote, and Love in Nepal. His movie turn didn’t really impress the audience, though.
