MUMBAI: Singer Babul Supriyo is affronted by news reports saying he has been pencilled in to act in a film being made by Kamal Khan, who made the controversial ‘Deshdrohi’ last year.
Khan has gone on record saying he has singers like Sukhwinder Singh, Vinod Rathod and Babul Supriyo acting in his forthcoming project based on the 26/11 attacks on Mumbai.
Says Supriyo, I am taken aback by Khan’s greed for cheap publicity. I wish to clarify that neither have I signed nor have I discussed any specific film with Mr. Khan. We met through a common friend but we never discussed my role in a film on 26/11….

Although Supriyo has already acted in a couple of Bangla movies, he insists he is not interested in a movie based on the 26/11 terror plot. The 26/11 incident is too serious an event to be made into a film. Largely speaking, the primary motive of a film is to entertain and while one might subscribe to the idea of making a documentary on it to educate the common man and create awareness in society about the menace of terrorism; I believe that sensationalising it through a film is quite frivolous an idea….
Talking about the current lot of new singers riding the wave of modern technology, Supriyo explains, With modern softwares like the Melodyne and the Antares which can perfectly tune any so-called â€?besura’ voice to aptly suit a song, a few super-hits songs sung by complete non-singers in the last two to three years have proved that the general audience is not particularly against the idea either….
Apart from being a singer, Supriyo took up acting in Bengali movies two years ago. Today, singers and musicians including myself, are exploring new avenues. We are indeed feeling a little un-inspired having lost our value and indispensability to new singers claiming fame on the back of modern technology. The success of a few so called non-star cast Bollywood films in recent times have proved that our film making has grown beyond the concept of having a huge star playing the ‘hero’ in a film. This new trend has opened new avenues for aspiring actors who are not exactly ambitious about playing the hero’ in a film….
In the last couple of years, Babul Supriyo has worked with directors like Tarun Mazundar and Sandip Ray. He is currently working on a Bangla film titled, â€?Hit list’ directed by Sandip Ray where he plays a negative role, the film goes on floor on 20 March. Supriyo is also in talks with a few Bollywood filmmakers for his 3 forthcoming projects.
When contacted, Kamal Khan maintained that Babul Supriyo came to him asking for a role in his movie and he is very much a part of the project. He says, Sukhwinder is still thinking about the offer and Vinod Rathod is also on board. The film has 30 more characters including Siddharth Kairala, Gulshan Grover, Payal Rohatgi and myself…. The music for the film would be composed by DJ Sheizwood and lyrics are being penned by Sameer, he says.
