MUMBAI: Guru Nanak’s teachings have enlightened generations that have gone by and generations to come. He has also become an integral part of Punjab’s music – a way of expression for his followers. The biggest of Punjabi music industry names have given the Guru tribute at some point in time and following the trend is The Rising Star winner Bannet Dosanjh.
Bannet recently released a song called Wahe Guru with Eros International. “I remember singing along with friends with the Sangat in Gurudwara before The Rising Star and still continue to do that. When Krishika Ma’am (Krishika Lulla-Director of the music video), briefed about this song and played the scratch, I was more than happy to do this service for Nanakji.”
He adds, “I am glad that after the phenomenal success at The Rising Star, I could express my gratitude to Guru Nanakji in my voice.”

Like most Punjabi musicians Bannet too believes that spirituality plays an important role in his life. A trained classical singer, Bannet says, “When I started to sing, I used to sing to earn money. I wanted to fund my studies as my financial condition was not strong. However, later I started learning classical music from Ustad Shamshad Ali Khan, I was introduced to the pure resonance of Tanpura. The effect that Tanpura has on you is beyond words and connects you deeply with the soul. The legends of classical music have always spoken about this spiritual resonance. My day today doesn’t start without the Tanpura as I feel closer to Wahe Guru with it.”
Bannet stands true to the title of the Rising Star as from humble beginnings he became a household name post the win. He admits that life has changed for him in many ways. However, the biggest happiness for him is that his parents are now known as Bannet’s parents, he shares, “I feel so proud when my parents are known by my name. I have a fan following and recognition. Plus, our financial condition has improved.”
He adds, “I agree that now the responsibility has doubled as I have to maintain the good name and reputation.”
Post Rising Star, Bannet took his time to engage himself in a project and found Eros Music the best platform for it. He elaborates, “I had a couple of offers but I chose Eros as the team is extremely cooperative and does research about any project they take up. Working with Krishika ma’am was also a good and learning experience.”
About his upcoming projects, he says, “I have done a lot of scratches for many web series and movies. A couple of songs are ready but I can’t reveal much right now.”
