MUMBAI: Renowned percussionist Taufiq Quereshi visited Mumbai’s Radio City 91.1FM where he and his percussion ensemble ‘Mumbai Stamp’ performed LIVE exclusively for music aficionados on Planet Radiocity.com. The group included a motley bunch of session musicians and other percussionists along with Quereshi’s son Shikhar Naad.
Taufiq Qureshi formed ‘Mumbai Stamp’ three years ago. This group is known for creating some incredible music using what would normally be termed as waste material i.e. containers, water cans and trash cans. Pulsating and rhythmical, the group performs harmoniously in perfect sync with every beat.
Exclusively speaking to www.planetradiocity.com tabla maestro Quereshi said that he was inspired to form this unique outfit after seeing the slums and garbage surrounding the Mumbai airport, on his way back from Singapore. ‘Mumbai Stamp’ has also been featured in an album called ‘Bombay Fever’ released by Music Today. The track was recorded purely using waste material collected in and around localities where the band members reside and using them as percussive instruments. In the future, Mumbai Stamp plans to release a full length instrumental album.
