RJ Bhavna of Radio Misty is content with what she has in life. She does not wish to explore newer regions when it comes to RJing. At the same time she is also in love with her profession and cannot imagine doing anything else in life in spite of being a science student.
In conversation with Radioandmusic.com RJ Bhavna talks about her passion for RJing and her love for the mountains.

How did RJing happen to you?
I belong to a small village on the way to Darjeeling called Kurseong and the only radio station that is available there is All India Radio (AIR). As children, the only FM station that we heard was AIR. In fact, I use to even participate in children’s program for AIR. The only reason I participated was because of money that these programs got me, which I used as my pocket money.
Later, I moved to Darjeeling for college and decided to apply for the job of an announcer in AIR. After a lengthy interview process, I got the job as an announcer. I spent two years at AIR as an announcer. During my tenure there, I came across an ad of a new radio station in the newspaper. The radio station was for North Bengal and I applied for it. Luckily I got a call for auditions that were being held in Kolkata. I got selected and trained there for a year and soon thereafter I was on-air. This radio station was none other than Radio Misty.
How long have you been an RJ at Radio Misty?
I moved to Siliguri in November 2007 and from then on I have been their radio jockey. It has been eight years since. In fact, my co-RJ, RJ D.T and I have been running the ‘Misty Subha’ show together and it is one of the most appreciated shows here.
What are the things that you like about your job?
I always wanted to be an RJ. So, I’ve been living my dream and I like everything about it. But, if I have to highlight, I’d say it gives me an opportunity to speak my heart. I love listening to songs and playing them for others so, I am living my passion. I love the things that my listeners do for me. Recently a listener got a cake for me on my birthday and he had travelled really far to reach our station. These things touch your heart and for me they are extremely precious.
What are the difficulties that you face as an RJ?
I believe everything in life has a negative and a positive side. Waking up early is the most difficult part for me. As a kid I wanted to grow up to sleep longer but I wake up at 5:30 am to be on my show. It does not matter what the situation around is – be it be an earthquake, heavy rains – one has to be at work on time.
Most of the RJs pre-record their shows. Don’t you do the same?
No. Our shows go live. Hence, we have to be at work every single day no matter what the situation is.
What about holidays?
I do get offs as our show runs from Monday to Saturday I get to go back home on Sundays and that is more than enough. I don’t need any more holidays.
There are high chances of goof-ups in a live show. How do you tackle those?
Luckily for me things are easier as I run a duet show. Hence, if there are times when I goof-up, my co-RJ corrects it tactfully. I think it’s also easier for me because we are very compatible. If there are differences between two RJs things do get bad.
Wouldn’t you want to run a solo show?
I think I am content with what I have. Frankly speaking I’ve never had such a thought.
Do you raise social issues on your show?
Our show is a mix of fun elements and social causes like most radio shows. Currently we are working on Swachh Bharat Abhiyan because Darjeeling stood 129th and we want it to get better ranking.
Don’t you wish to go to a bigger city or get more famous?
I am an introvert and I am not that crazy about being in the limelight. So, I am happy with where I am. Moreover, I am not sure if I will get used to the weather outside. I just love it here. This is home for me.
