MUMBAI: Television channels and radio stations are getting into the spirit of celebrating International World Music Day, aka Fête de la Musique, with special programming. From current pop music to oldies and indie music, there will be a lot of music choices available to music lovers on Sunday, 21 June.
At 12 noon and 6 pm on 21 June, AXN will air ‘One Direction: This Is Us’, the 2013 British-American concert film chronicling the members of the UK pop boy band. The documentary includes stunning live concert footage, and showcases the band’s meteoric rise to fame, from their humble hometown beginnings and competing on the X-Factor, where they first gained limelight, to conquering the world and performing at London’s famed O2 Arena.

9XO will celebrate hits from across decades in a special block called ‘9XO Unchanged Melodies’, playing music videos of classic musicians with their contemporaries. The programme will be broadcast over a period of three days from 19 to 21 June, featuring about 20 artists. Few music videos will air on 19 June and 20 June, while the entire playlist will air on 21 June, said 9XO Programming Head Clyde D’Souza.
“Across decades, across genres, music is the same while the message is recycled. But, the melody remains unchanged. We are playing 20 songs, pairing Whitney Houston with her contemporary Beyoncé. Similarly, we have placed Backstreet Boys with One Direction, Michael Jackson with Bruno Mars, Shania Twain with Taylor Swift, Sir Elton John with Sam Smith, Spice Girls with Little Mix, Cyndi Lauper with Miley Cyrus and Bon Jovi with Five Seconds of Summer,” D’Souza added.
On 21 June, for World Music Day, Vh1 is hosting a first-of-its-kind online music festival titled, ‘Vh1 Relay Music Festival’. During the course of this festival, 11 independent music artists will take over control of the Vh1 Twitter ID for an hour and a half, each, from 12 noon onwards, and share YouTube video links along with descriptions. Artists include Lost Stories, Sandunes, Alobo Naga, Delhi Sultanate, SICKFLIP, Anish Sood, Nucleya, Kini Rao, Voctronica, Bombay Bassment and Them Clones.
Radio stations will also have something to offer listeners on World Music Day. Radio City will kick of celebrations from 19 June onwards, from 7 am to 9 pm. The network will feature artists like Kailash Kher, Aakriti Kakkar, Neeti Mohan and Shibani Kashyap to name a few, along with various indie artists who will be singing unplugged versions of the hit numbers. Radio City Malayalam and Kannada will have Antakshari on radio. Meanwhile, Radio City Tamil will play all kinds of Tamil music throughout the day, and RJ 2Blue will speak about the ten well known indie artists from India.
PlanetRadiocity.com will run a contest across all of its 21 online radio stations. The contest will be held from 19 to 21 June. Seven questions revolving around PlanetRadiocity.com will be asked, while Radio City Fusion will play classical folk music from different parts of India on 21 June starting from 4 in the evening.
