In the Indian aesthetic tradition, rasa (being the direct source of heightened bliss), is the ultimate goal of all artistic expression. Every musical note has its character, colour and beauty. The relationship between raga (arrangement of notes) and rasa (mood or sentiment) can be creatively captured through the artistic medium of music, dance and literature.
In this novel thematic presentation, the highly acclaimed santoor maestro Shivkumar Sharma will explore the subtle interpretations of some of the nine rasas, employing specially selected melodies to evoke the corresponding mood in listeners.
The santoor, a folk instrument from Kashmir, owes its classical status to Shivkumar Sharma, who faced much criticism from the orthodoxy when he first attempted to showcase its strengths on the concert platform. Then modifying its features suitably, he created a new technique of playing with which he could sustain the notes and sound continuity. With a career spanning over half a century, wherein he has displayed his consummate skill and spontaneity, Shivkumar Sharma has made the instrument popular with a wide-ranging audience. The recipient of many awards, including the Padma Vibhushan (2001) and Tansen Samman (2004), he is able to straddle many kinds of musical worlds with panache.
