MUMBAI: The first track released as part of Sony India’s Project Resound saw two completely different musicians come together. Benny Dayal, a popular Tamil and Bollywood singer joined forces with one of the country’s upcoming bass heavy electronic artistes- Nucleya to create ‘Tamil Fever’. The track is pure South Indian street music fused with global bass, making it a dance track.

Speaking with Radioandmusic.com about the concept of the track, Nucleya said that the general idea was to capture the purest emotions of street music, which is dancing. “Dance is the essence of street music. I also feel Indian street music can go global,” the New Delhi based artiste said.

The track has been created by using samples of instruments that are generally used for performing street music. The ‘nadaswaram’ and ‘chenda’ are two instruments that are used quite a bit in the track, the bass electronic artiste confirmed.

‘Tamil Fever’ was first conceptualised when Nucleya and Dayal were working together for MTV Sound Trippin in Kerala. Dayal revealed that Nucleya played the instrumental for him at that time, and soon after, the melody was laid down for the track. “It happened really quickly. We had a recording of the track on the laptop so we could save the idea. Months later Sony approached me and told me about the project and asked me to be a part of it,” Dayal said.

When asked by Sony who he would be comfortable working with for Project Resound, Dayal immediately thought of Nucleya. “When Nucleya and I spoke about it, we thought of the track. We considered this a great platform to bring out something completely different. This is a unique sound because its heavy bass electronic, it has a marching band, street sound and folk. Everything is put together in a very weirdly cool combination,” he said.

The two also stated that putting the two completely different genres together was not in the least bit difficult. “I had the instrumental ready for the track. It was only missing lyrics and vocals. When Benny heard the track he came up with the vocals and had the lyrics written by one of his friends,” added Nucleya.

Dayal also added that the best part of the process of making the track was that both of them were given creative freedom with no one interfering. “It happened really quickly. They let us do our thing and bring out the best that we could,” he said.

Speaking about how the track will promote the new line of Sony headphones, Dayal said, “The song has all the frequencies required, it is a perfect combination of everything. It is a clean and crisp in sound. These headphones will give you the perfect perspective of the mix.”

He emphasised that a lot of work goes into creating music, but when people download and pirate music, it reduces the sound quality. Dayal is of the opinion that everyone should pay for entertainment. “It is the one thing that brings solace to your life at the end of the day and every time music is pirated, people are losing out on quality. That is what Project Resound supports; any musician would support the same cause. A great system or a great pair of headphones, the source that you have has to give you the perfect quality.”

This collaboration could very well see the two working together again. “Benny can sing in different languages. He opens up your perspective to other genres of music regardless of what the genre is. He has got a good perspective of that, which makes it easy and interesting to work with him,” Nucleya said of Dayal. Likewise, Dayal said that he would work with Nucleya in the future if the opportunity arose, as he has always been interested in electronic music.
