MUMBAI: A handwritten lyric sheet by Bob Dylan for the classic hit track ‘Like a Rolling Stone’ has become the most expensive rock manuscript to be sold. According to reports, the manuscript was auctioned by Sotheby’s auction house and sold at a little over $2 million.
The lyric sheet is said to have the folk singer/songwriter’s very own handwriting and was apparently bought by an anonymous Bob Dylan who is from California. Sotheby described the draft as “the only known surviving draft of the final lyrics for this transformative rock anthem”.
In addition to the lyrics of the 1965 song, it also includes revisions and doodles drawn by Dylan on the four-page manuscript. The paper on which the lyrics have been written are taken from the Roger Smith Hotel, which is in Washington DC.
At the same auction, another of Dylan’s handwritten manuscript for the track ‘A Hard Rain’sa-Gonna Fall’ was also sold for $485,000.
‘Like a Rolling Stone’ is part of Dylan’s studio album ‘Highway 61 Revisited’, which was released in 1965. The renowned singer and guitarist was 24 years old when he wrote the tracks, which went on to become one of his most popular songs.
The previous record holder was John Lennon’s handwritten lyric sheet for ‘A Day in the Life’ from the Beatles ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ album, which sold for $1.2 million.
