MUMBAI: Jazz label Impulse is back in action with the release of ‘Viper’s Drag’, a retro-modern composition from Henry Butler-Steven Bernstein and Hot 9. The composition, which will be out on 15 July, will be a way of reviving the label.
Butler, Bernstein, and the Hot 9 have filled the upcoming release with modern flavours and lively arrangements, stated the label. The two first worked together in 1998.
The label will focus on new releases from artistes including Randy Weston, Kenny Barron, Jacky Terrasson, Ran Blake, Rodney Kendrick, Sullivan Fortner, Jean-Luc Ponty/Stanley Clarke/Biréli Lagr?ne, Madeleine Peyroux to name a few. The new releases will also include an unreleased live duo album from Charlie Haden and Jim Hall recorded at the Montreal International Jazz Festival in 1990.

The label was founded in 1960 by Creed Taylor, and is part of Universal Music Group’s jazz assets The Verve Music Group. Impulse Label was inactive in the late 70’s and was revived in the late 80’s.
The label soon after its formation had become the destination of ‘The New Wave In Jazz’ with remarkable recordings from likes of John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Gil Evans, Ray Charles, Quincy Jones, Duke Ellington, Sonny Rollins, Pharoah Sanders, Art Blakey, Max Roach, Charlie Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra, and many more.
