MUMBAI: Not long ago, Mithoon walked away with maximum number of accolades for the song ‘Tum Hi Ho’ from ‘Aashiqui 2’. His success in 2014 continued with chartbusters ‘Baarish’ from the film ‘Yaariyan’ and ‘Baanjara’ from ‘Ek Villain’. The 29 year old has composed and written yet another soulful number, ‘Hum Rahe Na Hum’ for ‘Creature 3D’ and the vocals are rendered by Benny Dayal.
Talking about the brief of the song to Radioandmusic.com’s Dhairya Ingle he said, “The song is about a boy loving the girl to a point that he melts away into her losing his identity. This particular emotion is resonated throughout the song. Vikram Bhatt and Bhushan Kumar were very clear in their brief to me. They told me that the entire soundtrack should be relationship oriented and then they just left it to me.”
Mithoon has always roped singers who are best known for singing in the romantic genre. When asked why he chose Benny Dayal for ‘Hum Rahe Na Hum’ he explained, “It was a last minute decision to bring in Benny Dayal as the shoot mix also had my vocals. It was a creative experiment to team up with him. I had heard his regional romantic number and that was so beautiful that I had to work with him. Also I feel that Dayal has a lot more to offer than just the fast paced numbers and he already has sung some beautiful ballads in the past.”

People often say his music is inspired by AR Rahman to which he positively retorted, “It is a big compliment for me and I think AR Rahman has been a revolution for the music industry. I was in the fourth grade when Roja’s music released and I have learnt a lot from him. But at the same time I know that I am here to tell my own story and in the last ten years of my career I have established my own dimension with my listeners.”
In this era, it is often said that anyone can be a singer with the help of auto tuners, but the ‘Tum Hi Ho’ composer feels that it is primarily important to learn music. “Auto tuners are used only to erase minor dents in the voice. They cannot give you the feel or the expression that the song requires. This can only come when you learn music and have the basic set of skills required.”
Since the age of 19 Mithoon has been making chartbusters like ‘Tose Naina Lage’, ‘Woh Lamhe’ and ‘Maula Mere’, but for a few years he spaced out from the music industry. Elaborating further on this he said, “I decided to space out because after delivering hits, I felt like I did not have a voice of my own. Thus I travelled a lot, in search of my voice. Many international artistes space out when they feel the same. I did not want to work for the heck of it, so the best thing at that point was to stay away from the limelight for a while.”
