Filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj’s upcoming movie ‘Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola’ is a comedy-drama. The film features actors Imran Khan, Anushka Sharma and also stars Pankaj Kapur and Shabana Azmi in supporting roles. It is all set for release in cinemas worldwide on 11 January 2013.
The music has been composed by Vishal Bhardwaj himself and lyrics is penned down by the legendary Gulzar.7 Khoon Maaf (2011), Ishqiya (2010), Kaminey (2009) and Omkara (2006) are the other films of Vishal Bhardwaj where he has composed and directed.
The album of the film kick starts with the title song ‘Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola’. Vocals of Sukhwinder Singh, is accompanied with Ranjit Barot providing back-up vocals, bring out the energy of the awesomely designed dance number. You can clearly hear the influence of African music and the blend of this has not in, anyway, affected the music overall. The song is one of those songs in respect of lyrics which has no major significance but overall it plays well and surely, makes a space in list of audience who need new energetic song to replace some old once in their playlist. Though, it will not be the most memorable songs that will stay for long.
Lyrics of ‘Khamakha’ have so much depth in words and the way it’s sung by Vishal Bhardwaj and Prem Dehati. The heart break song is completely a play of words which really play with few strings in the mind. Halke halke…Dhime Dhime… is how the song proceeds putting your heart beat to rest after title song Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola. However, I would recommend it more than anything for its lovely lyrics.
‘Oye Boy Oye boy Charlie’ is a flirty, naughty song that leads you to at least settle for a smile. Rekha Bhardwaj sung Oye Boy Oye boy Charlie in so much Indian way that it doesn’t sound as an English word at all. Qawwali mixed song is sung by Rekha Bhardwaj, Mohit Chauhan and Shankar Mahadevan gets you grooving by the end of the song. The backing vocals all decorated neatly in light-hearted song and this playful backing vocal makes it engaging. It you want to introspect on the lyrics then this is not one of those songs you would like to give much time thinking about. Just listen and smile on the mischievous lyrics and move on to another track.
Sukhwinder Singh and Master Saleem have sung ‘Lootnewala’. Bhangra style is used in the song. The warm vocals of Sukhwinder cooperate well with aggressive message of the song. Dhol in the track sharpens the aggression in the track. Not being much aware of the background of the song in the film but, hopefully, it will have some action going around the song. There is another version of the same track sung only by Sukhwinder Singh.
Shaadi style ‘Shara-rara-ra’ is a short track, sung by Prem Dehati. This prefect track can be in the playlist, used only for Barat. Shahnai and Dhol pumps up the energy in this track. Remember, to add this to your list if you’re planning a wedding.
Rekha Bhardwaj has put the song ‘Badal uthiya’ with such an ease. String magic of the sitar in this song just adds up valve to Bhardwaj’s vocal. Lyrics are yet another thing which is really beautiful. Semi-classical manner composed song will surely get you engrossed. Prem Dehati is giving the male voice for the song for other male version. Out of the both version, Rekha Bhardwaj voice is more appealing.
You can hear the song start with Pankaj Kapur’s voice accompanied with Imran Khan trying to singing in the song. ‘Chaar Din ki’ track is sung by Pankaj Kapur, Imran Khan and Prem Dehati. It’s yet another song that can get into your playlist played only on weddings. The drums, Shahnai and the way it’s sung, will get you groove in the best pattern. Giving less thought to the song is important, personally, lyrics are based situational. It is also one of those mischievous numbers.
Track ‘Chor Police’ is not even more than a minute. Pankaj Kapur is singing the song but the significance of the song will only be understood only if you see the movie.
African chants and verses are sung by Umoja in track ‘Nomvula’. Hoping African music will soon be the new trend in the music. Nomvula is a Zulu track, in Zulu language. Nomvula, in Zulu, means ‘after the rain’.
To conclude with, soundtrack of Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola is one of those tracks that come and go. Apart from some songs like ‘Badal Uthiya’ (Rekha’s version), ‘Lootnewala’ and ‘Khamakha’ has some beautiful lyrics and composition. Other songs might work well in the movies, hopefully.
