MUMBAI: Multi-talented singer-composer Shweta Pandit prefers to release a series of non-Bollywood singles for fans in lieu than full-fledged albums. It’s a more effective way to reach fans and makes more business sense.
“The Indian market for full-fledged albums is completely washed out. It takes me eight-10 months to make an album and if it doesn’t reach people, I’d feel very down. Instead I plan to release singles one after another. As soon as I have around eight singles, I’ll compile them in an album for my fans.”
Her first single ‘Khedo Naa’ that released digitally worldwide last week has received positive reviews from critics and the video has been getting hits from fans.

The song, penned by Pandit is the first ever Hindi track released by international label – Maker Music which manages artists like Snoop Dogg.
Singles are also easier to produce, promote and market than albums and Pandit would like to expand her reach beyond the Internet using popular avenues like radio.
“Most of today’s radio stations are dominated by Bollywood music and interviews. Banners and production houses can buy airtime leaving little space for other music. But there are some which support independent music and I’m holding talks with them.”
While solo work satisfies her creative urges, her playback singing career is far from idle. Akshay Kumar starrer ‘Joker’ where she sings the title track with Sonu Nigam is releasing next week.
She is also involved in the film ‘Rakh’, directed by Tanuja Chandra with heavyweight tollywood composer MM Kreem. ‘Ishq in Paris’ produced by Preity Zinta will also feature Pandit’s Punjabi number which is due to hit screens later in the year.
“Making independent songs is a different ball game than singing for Bollywood films. A single for me is more personal – it’s a gift to my fans and a chance for them to hear me clearly,” says Pandit.
