MUMBAI: Continuing her winning streak across all major award functions this year, British soul-singer Adele has also swept the highest number of titles at 2012 Billboard Music Awards.
Bagging a total of 12 honours, the singer won Top Artist, Top Female Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Digital Songs Artist, Top Radio Songs Artist, Top Digital Media Artist, Top Pop Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album (21), Top Pop Album (21), Top Streaming Song Audio and Top Alternative Song (Rolling in the Deep).
Party-rock duo LMFAO won six trophies for Top Duo/Group, Top Hot 100 Song, Top Pop Song, Top Digital Song, Top Rap Song and Top Dance Song (Party Rock Anthem). Other major winners of the night included Coldplay, Wiz Khalifa and Lil Wayne amongst others.
Taylor Swift was given the Billboard Woman of the Year honour for her success as a recording artiste, while Katy Perry was given the Spotlight award for being the only female artist in history to see five top singles from one album. Veteran soul singer Stevie Wonder was honoured with the Icon award and performed tracks like ‘Higher Ground’, ‘Overjoyed’ and ‘Superstition’.
With some big losses in the music industry this year, the awards featured numerous tributes to late artistes. Hosts Julie Bowen and Ty Burrell paid homage to late Bee Gees singer Robin Gibb, who passed away on Sunday after a long battle with cancer. Natasha Bedingfield paid tribute to late ‘Disco Queen’ Donna Summer performing her hit single ‘Last Dance’, while Wiz Khalifa and Cee Loo Green honoured late Beastie Boy Adam Yauch.
The biggest tribute of the night was for Whitney Houston who was honoured with the Millennium award, as singers John Legend and Jordin Sparks rendered heartfelt renditions of ‘The Greatest Love of All’ and ‘I Will Always Love You’ against a backdrop of Houston’s photographs.
Other performers of the night included Katy Perry, Justin Beiber, LMFAO, Chris Brown, Usher, Linkin Park and Nelly Furtado amongst others.
