MUMBAI: With a 280% increase in mobile global shipments in 2011, android smartphones have attained a global market share of 32% from 13% in 2010, according to the â€?Android Device Base Database by Vendor’ report.
The report points out that with the entry of Indian and Chinese vendors into the market, the race to lower android smartphone prices is gaining momentum, which in consequence has lead to the early emergence of mid-tier android devices.
In Q3 2011 conference call google announced that the total number of android activations had surpassed 190 million, up from 135 million in Q2 2011. Furthermore Google’s recent acquisition of Motorola with its 17,000 approved and 7500 pending patents, will considerably assist in the protection of android and it’s ecosystem from patent infringement lawsuits. The move is further likely to boost android sales, and consequently the market share.
