Eric Vaarzon Morel – flamenco guitar

Eric Vaarzon Morel (1961) was only sixteen when he studied under Paco Pe?±a at the 7e Rencontre de la guitare in France. At nineteen, inspired by this event he left home for Spain where he lived and worked for two years. In the 1980s he travelled through Europe with the Swiss group Flamencos en route. Playing his own flamenco compositions he has toured annually with his back up group Chanela. As a regular member of the Cuadro Flamenco he was heard for six years in theatres and on concert platforms all over Holland. For years now Eric has been integrating Western music and flamenco into ‘flamenco de hoy’ (today’s flamenco). The last few years he has performed in a wide variety of productions, played with classical, jazz and pop musicians, and familiarized himself with all the facets of world music. Eric’s music is no longer solely flamenco!

Theatre

In 1999 Eric composed and performed the music for Toneelschuur Haarlem’s production of De Ongelukkige (The Unhappy One) written by Abdelkader Benali and based on Louis Couperus’ novel of the same name about the last Moorish king, Boabdil.

‘East meets West, the intermingling of cultures, this is all in the old story but also in the new one written by Abdelkader Benali. My music is also a blend of classical, flamenco and western music, with a modern touch here and there.’ (Vrij Nederland, 2 January, 1999)

‘Guitarist Eric Vaarzon Morel’s flamenco, a Spanish genre with Arabic roots, is the pivot on which the production rests. Vaarzon Morel has reinforced and supplemented the Arabic element with Turkish and Indian influences. This magnificent music carries the whole. Vaarzon Morel switches effortlessly from fiery, impassioned emotions to melancholy. One moment he scarcely touches the strings, the next he thumps the guitar as if it were a percussion instrument.’ (….)…, although musically it remains a fabulously beautiful performance.’ (NRC Handelsblad, 5 January, 1999)

The programme Turkish soefi and flamenco was an encounter between Eastern mysticism and Andalusian realism. Combinations of stringed instruments like the kanun with the guitar, rhythmic improvisations on the caja and k??dum with the mystical melody of the ney. At the invitation of the Kulsan Foundation Eric played this programme with Tahir Aydogdu and others on major concert platforms in the Netherlands and Istanbul.

In the 1999 – 2002 seasons Eric is the special guest of Flairck. Flairck’s Symphony of the Old World, Circus Jeroen Bosch and as from September 2002 Flairck’s new programme commemorating the 4th centenary of the United East India Company, the VOC.

In 2003/2004 Eric toured with Eric Vloeimans and played the Concierto de Aranjuez, flamenco and jazz in the programme Miles of sketches of Spain. Extra concerts, together with the Zappstrijkkwartet, were given in 2005.

Eric played a couple of years in the programme Five Great Guitars, with among others Jan Kuiper and Harry Sacksioni, uniting jazz, folk, latin and flamenco guitar music.

Last theatre season Eric presented his solo programme Solo Flamenhoc, una historia flamenca. By special request he played as supporting act in the concert of Dianna Reeves in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, for which he got rave reviews.

Abroad

Abroad Eric has given solo concerts at festivals in Germany (Flamenco Festival ’95 Potsdam) and Iceland (International Guitar Festival). He toured Austria, Switzerland and Italy with Flamencos en route. Together with Jan Akkerman, Eric toured the Dutch West Indies with the Five Great Guitars. In Turkey he presented the programme Soefi and Flamenco.

Conservatorium

Eric is principal teacher of flamenco guitar at the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam.

Movies

Eric recently played special flamenco guitar tracks for the movies Leef! and Het Schnitzelparadijs.

Dylan Fowler – Finger picking

After doing my bit in Suez, returned to S, Wales in 1959
Started piano lessons at age seven and later began studying the oboe at age twelve. Took up the electric guitar at the age of seventeen at which point music became very important to me. By this time I was no longer playing the oboe but my energies were directed to the guitar which I persued through my own studies rather than being formally taught. Some classical guitar lessons helped but I very much wanted to persue my own course. I eventually enrolled at the Welsh College of Music & Drama to do a Performers course but left as I felt I was learning far more musically outside of college than within.

In 1980 I moved to London and eventually formed a guitar duo with Dominic Miller (currently guitarist with Sting) specialising in a combination of Latin/Jazz and Original compositions. The duo was very successful over the next three years with a number of appearances at the Edinburgh Festival, numerous festivals in the UK, and a short tour of the USA. The album that emerged from that encounter was voted one of the best albums of 1984 by Derek Jewell of the Sunday Times. We went our seperate ways and I spent a year studying arranging and composition at Leeds College of Music.

I was offered work as composer /arranger at the Sherman Theatre in Cardiff and moved back down to Wales. I had a busy existence working in various theatre settings as well as the whole gamut of commercial work, gigs, sessions, writing and arranging etc.

In 1985 the Welsh Jazz Society commissioned me to write a series of pieces to be performed at St. Davids Hall as part of the Jazz Festival of that year. I performed them with a group that I put together called ‘Q’. In 1986 ‘Q’ were finalists in the 1986 Jazz Sounds competition held in London and televised on BBC2 featuring my original compositions.

1987 I was awarded the Lord Harlech Bursary enabling me to spend three months studying and travelling in the USA.

Returning to S. Wales, continued writing for theatre as well as performing in varied settings. I began developing ideas that would lead me to form a new ensemble called FREVO with the aim of blending my interest in using acoustic instruments to explore contemporary jazz/folk/world music through original compositions. 1989 FREVO official formed and began playing on the British Jazz Festival circuit as well as performances in France, Germany, Holland and the Czech Republic.
1992 Debut CD of FREVO released on Danny Thompsons Jazz Label, to enthusiastic revues.

1993 I was invited to join the legendary bass player Danny Thompson, in a nationwide tour as a member of his group, ‘Whatever’. This has led to ongoing session work with Danny on a number of album projects notably with the Canadian musician, Loreena Mckennit recorded at Peter Gabriels Real World Studio.

1995 Invited to play guitar, oboe, cor anglais and recorder as part of a large ensemble for the recording of the “Celtic Steppes” album featuring saxophonist , Dick Heckstall – Smith. The album was released in 1996 and awarded 5 stars by the BBC Music Magazine.

1996 Formed THE THREE AMOEBAS with Lee Goodall (wind instruments/percussion) and Paul Clarvis (hand percussion). The band is currently performing at festivals and is in the process of completing its’ debut CD.

1996/97 Invited as part of Danny Thompson’s Whatever to record with Richard Thompson on the Album

“INDUSTRY”. The album was released at the beginning of this year and a nationwide tour was completed in the spring of this year. The album is currently number 1 in Australia.

Since 1993 my partner, Gillian Stevens (composer and specialist viol player) and I, have perfomed as a duo specialising in a mix of early music, original compositions and east european music

Dave Goodman – Blues

Guitarist, singer and songwriter was born in Victoria B.C. Canada on March 28, 1965.

The youngest of seven children, he grew up in a musical household. Starting with the violin at age 12, he quickly changed over to the electric guitar taking private lessons and playing with his older brothers.

As a teenager, under the tutelage of West Coast guitarist Dave Vidal, he learned to play blues as well as guitar building and repair. From age 15-18 while still at home he became more and more interested in jazz and played together often with schoolmate and bandmate Miles Black. After graduating from highschool, Dave moved to Vancouver to study jazz at Vancouver College under Bruce Clausen.

The next few years found him playing all over Canada as well as in the U.S. including a house gig at the â€?Wave Waikiki’ where he hosted sessions with David Sanborn and Was Not Was. He also played in the bands of Canadian artists Neil James Harnett and Mark Hasselbach.

In 1990 Dave moved to Northern California where he became a fixture in the Bay Area blues scene playing together with guitarist Steve Kimock and singer Judge Murphy in theGoodman Murphy band. He also recorded forBlues Bureau International on CD#1 of a three CD set of Bay Area guitarists featuring Tommy Castro, Johnny Nitro, Garth Webber and Chris Cobb. Dave also played in trio formation with piano and organ player Stu Blank and drummer Ty Smith. It was with this trio that he had the honour of meeting and playing for John Lee Hooker who happened to walk into the South San Francisco club where they were playing. John Lee Hooker stayed and listened to a ninety minute set and then signed his name with a felt pen on the front of Dave’s Stratocastor. Dave laquered over the signature and it is still there today. It was one of the biggest honours and highest moments of his career he says.

Always staying interested in the technical side of music Dave became involved with the renowned California amplifier manufacturer Mesa Boogie in 1991. During his years with Mesa, he designed The Revolver, a rotating speaker system for guitar much like a â€?Leslie’ is for organ. Boogie licenced the speaker from him and put it into production in 1995. Carlos Santana bought the first two which Dave delivered to him personally- another very big honour and high point in his musical experiences.

During this period Dave toured Europe as a member of the Ford Blues Band. With the help of Patrick Ford he began to make contacts in Europe . Eventually he secured a management and a record deal first withBear Family Records and later withCrossCut Records. Through this time Dave was still playing electric guitar in trio formation with Canadian drummer Aaron Anderson and Hawaiian bassist Billy Mendoza as the Dave Goodman Band. This band only recorded one CD, Live 96 was recorded at the Breminale Festival and was released on Bear Family Records (BCD 17009) that year.

In 1998 , ready for a change from living in California, Dave moved to Bremen, Germany. Wanting to make a musical change as well as doing some soul searching, he took a break from playing live and began playing fingerstyle acoustic guitar and writing songs in a more personal style. His first acoustic CD, Roadbook Rhymes (CrossCut Records CCD 12001) , a very intimate collection of original songs in a roots, singer songwriter style, was released in 2000 on Crosscut Records. It was mostly a solo recording with three songs in duo formation with guest guitarist from Switzerland, Hank Schizzoe.

His second acoustic CD, Rocks, Skies and Waters (CrossCut Records CCD 12007) was released in 2004. It is also a very personal collection of roots oriented original songs ranging from solo, to several instruments played by Dave, to trio performances featuring German drummer Oliver Spanuth and Russion acoustic bassist Paul Pastouchov. Both CDs received very positive critiques in Europe.

Since the release of â€?Rocks, Skies and Waters’ Dave has been touring regularly in Central and Eastern Europe both solo and in trio formation.

He is also staying busy with concerts and workshops organised by Yamaha such as the â€?2006 Summer Namm Show’ in Austin Texas, the â€?Frankfurt Music Messe’, and a U.K. tour along side Glenn Tilbrook and Antonio Forcione which took place in fall 2006.

Between touring Dave is also becoming more in demand as a producer.
In 2005 he co-produced an acoustic CD for French singer Fred Blondin, who composes for and tours with French star, Johnny Hallyday.

Dave Goodman’s live shows are high energy, and often humorous.
He takes his audience through an array of emotions with sensitive ballads, high powered blues with both funny and moving stories in between.
