Making sad songs is easier than making people groove to a party number: Badshah
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

MUMBAI: Badshah is one of the biggest names in the rap business today. Most believe that Honey Singh’s exit from the music scene lead to the rapper’s rise, which could be partially true but, Badshah gives the credit of his success to Sony Music and Karan Johar.

Badshah who has hits’ like ‘DJ Wale Babu’, ‘Kaala Chashma’, ‘Breakup Song’ and ‘Kar Gayi Chull’ amongst others says, “It’s unfortunate for both of us because Honey was unwell and I was there. And because I was in the music scene during his absence I often hear that I am here because he isn’t. I had entered the industry much before Honey fell ill. In 2014 the top three songs were ‘Sunny Sunny’, ‘Abhi Toh Party Shuru Hui Hai’ and ‘Saturday Saturday’ and two of my songs were a part of it. 2015 was about ‘DJ Wale Babu’ and ‘Dheere Dheere’. In 2016 ‘Baby Ko Base Pasand Aaya’ and it was all about Vishal-Shekhar. There was no Badshah or Honey. Our genre is tiny. It’s just Honey, Raftaar and me right now, so people compare.”

The hitmaker further adds that it’s Sony Music that truly deserves to be credited for his success. “Sony Music has played a very important part in my life. I don’t think I would have been here without manpower and strategic support from them.”

Like Sony, Karan Johar too showed immense faith in Badshah’s talent and the rapper truly loves him for it. In fact, he states that Karan has the first right to refuse his songs.

On the growing trend of remakes, that Badshah is a huge part he states, “I feel there is always a phase. ‘Kaala Chashma’ became a hit so, people are following it. But you should make remakes that will be remembered.”

Does this mean that Badshah will continue making remakes? Well, the rap-King is not banking his future on remakes. In fact, he has decided on staying away from remakes. “In my last interview I had said I won’t make remakes but I had to for Karan Sir. I’ve made remakes of both ‘Tamma Tamma’ and ‘Tunna Tunna’. Now, I will focus on originals.”

These originals can be anything from a sad to a happy party song. “I feel I can make a lot of good sad songs. Making sad songs is easier than making people groove to a party number. Doing comedy is difficult.”

The singer states that his aim is to make good songs at the end of the day. “It’s cliché but it’s tough to make good songs.”

Furthermore, the rapper will be seen judging Star Plus’ singing reality show ‘Dil Hai Hindustani’. Talking about the show Badshah states that he will be easiest judge to please on the show. “I should enjoy what they are singing. If I am enjoying their singing they are in. I will also have a separate setup on the table and you will see that on the show. I am the easiest to impress out of the judges.”

The ‘Abhi Toh Party Shuru Hui Hai’ singer also reveals that he has recommended most of the talent on the show. So they won’t come as a surprise to him.
