MUMBAI: Oscar wining sound designer Resul Pookutty’s autobiography ‘Shabdatharampadam’ was released by Maharashtra governor K Sankaranarayanan on 13 May 2010.
The 397 page book, which Resul Pookutty prefers to call a ‘Travelogue’, is an oral narrative describing life changing events from his life. The book is co-authored by published author and poet Baiju Natrajan.
“For me, it is not a autobiography – it’s a travelogue from the surrounding where I was born, where I studied, places and people I met, including all the legendaries of cinema whom I interacted with,” he said
Pookutty also read out two chapters from the book, and going by that, it clearly suggests that Pookutty’s ‘travelogue’ is high on humour quotient
The Oscar winning team of lyricist Gulzar and A R Rahman were also present at the occasion.
A R Rahman, who is otherwise known to keep his interactions with the media to its minimal, opted to speak a little longer than usual.
Rahman said, “People ask me which is your favourite instrument, and that is a very difficult question to answer. The instrument shines only when the player is good – other wise any instrument can destroy the peace of people. Like that, any profession can only excel when the people involved in that bring respect to the profession. And I respect Resul for that – he has brought so much of respect to the sound design profession. I wish him good luck, god bless and get inspired by his story.”
Lyricist Gulzar, who also shared the Oscar with A R Rahman for Slumdog Millionaire said, “I feel privileged to work with such young creative people.” He added candidly, “And though I can’t hide my age, I start feeling younger when I am working with Rahman and Resul.”
Even though the the book is first launched in Malayalam, Gulzar said, he managed to read transcripts of the english version which will be released soon.
“I read few translations, and I observed that Pookutty’s stress was always on sound.” Giving an example, he said, “Like, there is a chapter ‘Circus’ in the book – I admire the way he introduces this chapter highlighting the sounds you hear when you are in a circus – I’ll wait for the translation to come along,” he added
‘Shabdatharampadam’ is jointly published by Malyalam Manorama and Penguin India. Besides the book, Pookutty’s new website writerresulpookutty.com was also launched.
