MUMBAI: After Tanmay Bhat’s discourteous snapchat video on Lata Mangeshkar, New York Times journalists Nida Najar and Suhasini Raj called the veteran singer a ‘so-called playback singer’ for Bollywood films, in their report containing Tanmay Bhat’s video controversy.
Their report did lead to a lot of annoyance amongst the Indians because the Bharat Ratna awardee is just not a so-called singer. She has seven decades of an illustrious career that speak volumes about her.

Lata Mangeshkar’s career started in 1942 and has spanned over seven decades.
The veteran singer has recorded over a thousand songs for Bollywood films.
She has sung songs in over thirty-six regional Indian languages.
Lata Mangeshkar has won India’s highest award in cinema, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1989 by the Government of India.
She has been awarded three National Film Awards, the ‘Bharat Ratna’ in 2001 which is India’s highest civilian honour, Padma Vibhushan in 1999 and Padma Bhushan in 1969.
She also won four Filmfare Best Female Playback Awards, Maharashtra Bhushan Award in 1997. She was later awarded Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993.
Lata Mangeshkar also composed music for the first time in 1955 for Marathi movie ‘Ram Ram Pavhane’. Later in the 1960s, she composed music for quite a few Marathi movies such as ‘Maratha Tituka Melvava’ and ‘Mohityanchi Manjula’ (1963), ‘Sadhi Manase’ (1965), ‘Tambadi Mati’ (1969) under the pseudonym of Anand Ghan.
The Guinness Book of Records listed Lata Mangeshkar as the most recorded artist in the history, for recording over 25,000 solo, duet, and chorus-backed songs in 20 Indian languages between 1948 and 1974. (Latter editions of Guinness Book stated that Lata Mangeshkar had sung no fewer than 30,000 songs between 1948 and 1987).
