MUMBAI: BIG 92.7 FM, India’s No. 1 FM Station and a radio initiative from Reliance Media World Ltd., today crowned Mr. Devendra S. Desai as the â€?BIG Mumbaikar’ of the year! Mr. Desai, who runs a â€?Toy Foundation’ that works for the Right of the Child to play and aims to educate children beyond reading and writing,. .Held at the â€?Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital Convention Center’ Mr. Desai was applauded at a glittering awards ceremony and amidst prominent celebrity guests like Priya Dutt, Mahesh Bhatt, Govinda and Shreyas Talpade to name a few. The event presided with scintillating performances by Shilpa Rao and Sukhvinder Singh who set the stage on fire with their magnetic voices.
BIG Mumbaikar is an initiative undertaken by BIG 92.7 FM to recognize the strength and never say die attitude of Mumbaikars by felicitating all those who have contributed to the betterment of society. â€?BIG MUMBAIKAR’ kick started a month back (December 20, 2009) saw participation from many discerning Mumbaikars. Others nominated for the award were Mr. Hemant Chabbra, Ms. Akhila Maheshwari, Ms. Monica Batra and Shree Mansukhlal V Ruprelia who have all in their own way brought about a change in the society.
Mumbaikars were called upon to nominate anyone who they believe deserve to be titled the BIG Mumbaikar through heart-warming promos on BIG FM. The 5 week campaign from December 20th to January 17th, saw one nominee being short-listed each week, basis a robust voting system. Along with the robust voting system, BIG Mumbaikar’ also had a panel of eminent jury which comprised of ace film-maker Mahesh Bhatt and the Hon’ble Sheriff of Mumbai Dr. Indu Shahani who through their un biased judgment chose the most deserving candidate for the BIG Mumbaikar title. Mr. Devendra S Desai who selflessly rendered his service to the society.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Shailesh Bijlani – Station Head Mumbai – BIG 92.7 FM said The BIG Mumbaikar only furthers the endeavor of BIG 92.7 FM to offer radio as a platform to not just provide entertainment, but also give the local populace and podium to voice their opinion and acknowledge the contributions of the general public to our society. It is the resilience, contribution and solidarity that the people of the city demonstrate through these acts of selflessness that make the city so special. I am overwhelmed by the response we have received by Mumbaikars for this event. We are also grateful to the Hon’ble Sheriff of Mumbai Dr. Indu Shahani and Mr. Mahesh Bhatt for taking time out from their busy schedules to led credibility to this initiative….
On winning the award, an elated Mr. Desai said: I am thrilled and extremely honoured to receive this award! I truly believe charity starts from home, and what better way than starting from your very own city – Mumbai. I am also grateful to BIG 92.7 FM to recognize these small initiatives taken by a common man like me… I am sure this award will encourage many more Mumbaikars to come ahead and work for the society….
