MUMBAI: It was Slumdog Millionaire fervour all over again as composer A R Rahman collected yet another honour by taking home two Grammys at the event held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles a few hours ago.
‘Jai Ho’ won the best song in a motion picture and the soundtrack of Slumdog was adjudged the best compilation soundtrack for a motion picture. Rahman, who beat Bruce Springsteen (nominated for The Wrestler) to win the best song award, shares the award with veteran lyricist Gulzar who wrote ‘Jai Ho’.
“Jai ho” has been sung by Sukhwinder Singh, Tanvi Shah, Mahalaxmi Iyer, Vijay Prakash and Rahman himself.

Nominated for the first time at the Grammy’s, Rahman triumphed at the 2009 Oscars by winning double golden statuettes and at the Golden Globe Awards by winning the best original score award.
Unfortunately, the two other Indians who had been nominated for the Grammy – Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and Ustad Zakir Hussain – lost out in the respective categories.
Incidentally, Zakir Hussain who had won in the Best World Music category for the first time in 1992 for his album Planet Drum, had won it again last year in the Contemporary World Music Album category for his collaborative album Global Drum Project along with Mickey Hart, Sikiru Adepoju and Giovanni Hidalgo The album also featured other Indian names like Taufiq Qureshi on percussion and vocals, Niladri Kumar on Sitar and Dilshad Khan on the Sarangi.
This time, Hussain was nominated in the best classical crossover album category for his album “The Melody of Rhythm”, which features works by Leonard Slatkin, Bela Fleck, Hussain and Edgar Meyer (Detroit Symphony Orchestra) Amjad Ali Khan had been nominated in the best traditional world music album category for his album “Ancient Sounds”, a joint-venture with Iraqi oud soloist Rahim Alhaj.
