Cricket Fans and K-pop armies unite as India-Pakistan tensions ease: A new wave of online solidarity
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

MUMBAI: It’s often said that conflict can forge unexpected alliances — but few anticipated seeing India’s passionate cricket fans and the powerful K-pop fandoms standing side by side. Amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan, these two massive, and often divided, online communities have come together to fight misinformation and share accurate updates with the world.

Big respect to Indian BTS K-pop fans and Blackpink Fans who’ve consistently upheld India’s image on Twitter. While fandoms can be chaotic, you’ve shown maturity, unity, and global awareness. Thank you for representing us so well.
Jai Hind

Leading the charge, major K-pop fandoms like BTS’ ARMY and BLACKPINK’s BLINKs took to social media to explain the situation to global audiences unfamiliar with South Asia’s complexities. Their coordinated efforts didn’t go unnoticed — many Indians online began to recognize the unique influence and digital strength K-pop fans wield, particularly on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), where fake news has been spreading rapidly.

Desi K-pop fans, long active in countering false narratives, are now receiving widespread praise. With BTS boasting the largest K-pop following in India, even those new to the genre have started tuning in. “Big respect to Indian BTS and BLACKPINK fans who’ve upheld India’s image on Twitter,” one user wrote. “You’ve shown maturity, unity, and global awareness. Jai Hind.”

True! The Exponential 7 gang is doing a Fab job! They are using their numbers and groups the best way! Good for them! Jai Hind!

Another added, “True! The Exponential 7 gang is doing a fab job! They’re using their numbers and group coordination in the best way! Good for them! Jai Hind!”

Comments ranged from admiration to humor, with one user quipping, “BTS Army mein naya hoon, bag kahan rakhu?” (Translation: “I’m new to the BTS Army – where should I put my bag?”)

Many users also noted how this moment has shattered old stereotypes about K-pop fans being just teenage fangirls. “In reality, most ARMYs I’ve come across are highly educated, socially aware, and incredibly thoughtful. Amazing,” one post read.

K-pop fans, while enjoying the unexpected praise, have been quick to remind everyone that they are Indians first. Some even gave a playful warning that, by June, timelines will be flooded with excitement over BTS’ long-awaited reunion, as the 7-member group — Jin, SUGA, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook — returns after completing military service.

The timing couldn’t be more symbolic. On Saturday, US President Donald Trump announced that India and Pakistan had agreed to a “full and immediate ceasefire” following US mediation. Both nations, after days of cross-border firing, are now set to enter talks at a neutral location.

Confirming the ceasefire, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that the DGMOs (Directors General of Military Operations) from both sides had agreed to halt all military actions from 5 PM IST, with another conversation scheduled for May 12.

For now, the digital battleground has turned into a rare space of unity — where cricket lovers and K-pop armies are not only fighting misinformation together but also discovering mutual respect along the way.
